Well Met, Traveler!
I’m Sister Mary Margaret Mead-Hall and with The Traveling Anchoress, we dust off the interesting bits of Medieval and Renaissance history and make more than a few bad puns. Together, we pass time in good company with spirited discussions on topics that spark our curiosity and creativity.
History is far more entertaining and quirkier than your middle grades teacher made it out to be. We're passionate about both history and fun and we've made it our mission to share this passion. History isn't neat or tidy, but it happily doesn't need to be stale or dry.
Join us for a mazer (or two) of mead, a side of witty, intelligent humor and help us bring light to the Dark Ages and Revelry to the Renaissance!
Subscribe above and never miss the conversation!

Liz Scott, known in the SCA as Mistress Elizabeth de Belcaire is joining us in the Tavern tonight to provide an overview of Elizabethan embroidery! Her enthusiasm and passion for the subject is absolutely contagious!
Liz takes us through popular period motifs and gives us a step-by-step walkthrough of the embroidery process. We'll learn about her time spent in conservatories at UK museums and discuss the uncertain history of Elizabethan sweet bags.
The Anchoress shares a delightful recipe for mulled cider from her personal collection in her letter this month, delivered by a musical Cabin Boy.

S1E4 - Tavern Talk: Can We Honestly Recreate History?
Friday Aug 23, 2024
Friday Aug 23, 2024
Can we truly understand what it's like to recreate history as reenactors? What does it even mean to recreate history?
Join us for our first, "Tavern Talk", where some of the Tavern's patrons discuss this topic over a few mazers of mead.
Be sure to listen to the end for extra content from last month's discussion on the Canterbury Tales. We'll learn a bit about Margery Kempe and why Liberty is justified to bash the Victorians.

Despite what you were forced to learn about them in school, the Canterbury Tales contain layers of brilliant satire and are genuinely funny!
Liberty Stanavage, PhD, is a professor of Medieval, Renaissance , and Restoration literature. She's very passionate about her subject and enjoys sharing that interest with others by working to make literature more accessible for all to enjoy.
Tonight, we'll tag along with the pilgrims to Canterbury and delve into the layers of meaning and humor in these timeless tales!

S1E1 - Medieval Medicine with Stephen Shellenbean
Saturday May 18, 2024
Saturday May 18, 2024
This month at the Time Traveler's Tavern we have a far-ranging, time-traveling discussion on Medieval Medicine with Stephen Shellenbean, someone I consider a true "Renaissance Man".
We'll learn about his historical research spanning from the 14th century to a Landsknecht (German mercenary troop) field hospital, the American Revolution, and the quirky, Dr. John Kellogg.
He and his wife are the owners of America's premiere historically accurate tent company: www.Tentsmiths.com.
The Traveling Anchoress' envoy will deliver a letter to update us on her travels this month and provide a delicious recipe for Maywine.
Have you seen Stephen's "surgery" at any events? Let us know!
